Hello from Whitehorse, YT. Yesterday we left Fairbanks to head home via the most interesting route we could find that did not involve to many delays. We ended the day in Dawson City, YT after four hours of gravel (really means dust) roads after we left Chicken, AK. But the day started by seeing a moose right next to the road that did not mind having its picture taken. We were with 5o feet when the first Picture for today was taken. Later we saw a cow with two calves, and to other moose during the day. A real moose day.
The The Top of the World Highway runs along the ridges of a mountain for 150 miles before it drops down into Dawson City. It gets up in the air and some places you can see both ways forever. It is truly top of the world feeling. It is dusty, dusty and rough. Today the car got cleaned out and washed before we left Dawson for Whitehorse. Another beautiful drive, along the Klondike, the Steward and the Yukon rivers. And for course the mountains between them. They all are a part of the third longest river in North America, the Yukon. This is Gold country. The great Klondike gold rush of 1898 took place right here. Some amazing stories. We are now back on the Alaska Highway, once known as the Alcan Highway. We will have traveled it from its end in Delta Junction, AK to its start in Dawson Creek, BC. We now have two to three more days of travel on it.
The one thing about this country that is the most shocking to me is that Vastness of it. It is so big, the mountains are so big, the rivers are big, the valleys are big and it goes on for ever. Wow.
Our second picture for the day is of Five Finger Rapids of the Yukon river two hours before Whitehorse. This is about 2000 miles before it empties into the Bering Sea.
PS. Mary wants you all to know that she drug me to see the CanCan dancers at Diamond Tooth Gertie's Dance Hall, Saloon, and Gambling Hall. The girls could dance. I only watch their feet of course, as them holding their skirts very high was way to embarrassing for me. Yeah.
