We did decide to start the trip home tomorrow. We may camp, so we may not be on line every day. One of the roads we are headed for is the Top of the World Hyway. Between Tok, AK and Dawson City, YT. Folks tell us this is a great trip, but slow as the road is gravel. Will try to get something blog at least every other day.

A Day in Fairbanks
The day started with the excitement of getting the oil changed in the car. We then went to brunch, and shopping where we got some things for our daughters birthdays later this year. You, have to wait. Then we went on a paddle wheel boat on the Chena River. We saw, a plane (a "brush pilot") , racing dog team kennels, nice homes along the river, and an native village (a re-creation of one.) There are no pictures as we forgot to take the camera. But then I did not see anything I would think worthy of this blog. Mary did enjoy the trip and the native village. We then had a pleasant dinner on a deck over looking the river.

Clear and Chilly
We awoke this morning to a beautiful clear day. Being very clear and being at Denali in May, it was also very chilly. In fact the water had frozen over night, so there was no water in the cabin. At 7:30 we went to the breakfast furnished with the cabin in the incredible dinner room of the Perch, and they said they were working on get thing thawed. But they had water and breakfast for us. We ate then packed and headed for Fairbanks. Of course we go by the Park so we went in to see if we might get to see Mt McKinley, or Denali (both names are used for the mountain) We drove the 15 miles you are allowed to get in the park. Yes, it was very clear and we saw the mountain. The first picture is of Denali. We had already seen a moose before we got to the mountain view point, then just after we turned around, a Grizzly sow and two year old cubs crossed the road in front of the car three cars ahead of us. Every one stopped and after she and the cubs were a distance away we got out and watched them go to the river, and run along the river for about an mile. The mom was just taking it easy and the kids were playing and running. It was fantastic. Picture number two for today.
Finnally we left Denali and headed for Fairbanks. Checked with the visitor center, went to the Toyato Dealer to get the car serviced, (I have to back tomorow as the electical power was out for a while and their computer were not working yet and it stoped things.) it has been 4800 miles since it was serviced in White Bear Lake as we were leaving. Yes, we are now over 5000 miles on the trip, and that does not count the miles we "drove the Alaskan Marine Highway". It will be another 4ooo home. Fairbanks is a nice city, we are right on the river, where we will take at boat trip tomorrow afternoon. Then maybe Chena Hot Springs on Sunday. We have decided not to do the Artic Circle trip. Too hard on the our car and a tour is $ 165 each plus it leaves at 6 am and returns at 11 pm. Too much money and riding.
Should actually head home on Monday.

The Wilderness
y

We have just returned from our 8 hour bus ride into the wilderness of Denali. 53 miles on the only road into the National park. Then turn around and return. The bus driver is the tour guide. We had Clay Walker as our driver. He is now starting his 17th year driving the tour bus in Denali. He lives year around near the park. He knows the park well, and has a good eye to spot animals. We had a very good day. We saw: lots of Caribou, several groups of Dall Mountain Sheep, 4 Grizzly, 2 Red Fox, a Great Horn Owl with owlets, hundreds of snowshoe hares, (there is huge numbers of them and they are eating themselves out of house and home.), a Golden Eagle, several Ptarmigan (Alaska State Bird). Then there is the incredible scenery. We were on three rivers, and several of small mountains of the Alaskan Range. The bad news is that it was cloudy and we could not see Denali itself. But we saw it the other day. And of course it had to snow just to keep me from moving herel.

So pictures. Only took 89 today. I will be putting all here. ha ha ha.
But there are the Bears, two of them. Very strange for Grizzlies. They may be a mother and three year old cub, they may be a pair, or siblings. They don't know which of the three choices are true.
Then there is the Caribou. Mary wanted to see caribou, and we saw lots of them.
Dogs and Perch
On Wed we drove from the wonderful community of Talkeetna (correct Spelling) to Denali National Park. It took about two hours. Flat country then in to the mountains for the last thirty miles. But not high mountains, they are just and I mean just west of us.
At the park we went to the visitor Center, good for ten minutes, maybe fifteen. Then to the food service, where we gave up after ten minutes in line and moving ten feet. Then to the book store. Yes more books, but only three.
Then we went to the Sled Dog Kennels for a show. We got to pet some of the dogs, almost see some puppies, they were in a dog house with mommy. Then watch a show with dogs and sled. They use the dog sleds to patrol the park in winter. The picture of the day is one of the dogs and Mary.
Then off to the Wilderness Access Center where we got tickets for the Wilderness Tour at 6:50 am on Thursday. Yes, you read right. Mary was willing.
Then we went to the Perch Resort and Cabins to check into our cabin. It has a good double bed and two single beds, one of which is the sitting in the cabin, and its own small bathroom. But the Restaurant is wonderful. Since we had breakfast and lunch on our own, we decided to go there for dinner. Second best of the trip. Sits up on a hill, okay view, but great food and friendly service. Breakfast is there at 6 am. Comes with the cabin.
So now get ready for the day, 7-8 hours on a bus, full of tourist. Hope it is as good as Mary thinks it will be. It is the only way to see the park, as private cars are not allowed to drive past the entrance area where the visitor stuff is. Will let you know tonight.

At the foot of the Mountain
Good Morning from Talkeena, AK. As we drove here yesterday from the sea, we were able to see the Mountain. We are still about a 100 miles from Denali, but it looks like it is right there. Wow. What a mountain. The land here is flat with birch forest, streams and lakes. And there sits the mountain. Talkeena is a little town with neat shops, and bars, and cabins. We are in a fabulous cabin. The bed room is upstairs, but beautiful. We spent the evening sipping wine on the deck off the bedroom watching the stream. It was lovely. This is the life. The jelly lady, (owner of a small shop with local made stuff, 12, 000 jars of jelly last year.) said it was a mild winter, never more than four days at time until 20 below. It actually got above freezing in February. That is warm. We are learning to sleep in daylight, since that is all there is now. The sun does set but it does not get dark. And we are still 250 miles south of Fairbanks. The lodge where we rented the cabin is call the 62 degree lodge.
Today we go to Denali park and decide which bus ride to take on Thursday. It was unimpressive until we saw the mountain. It is not my desktop. I am writing this in word processor as there is not internet here at the cabin, but a coffee shop says they have internet, so will try there in little while. If it works well you will get to see the mountain picture that is the desktop.

Pictures for the Last Blog
I am going to try to post some pictures from the last blog. The connection seems better.
A Picture of the mountains as we flew by. How to get up close and personal with a mountain.
The harbor at Steward, AK. We saw this while Mary eat stuffed King Salmon and I had Halibut cheeks. MMMMM. And what wonderful view. I could live here, well not in the winter.

The Adventure get Adventurous
Today is Monday Memorial Day, 2008, today we had a quiet day as we drove to Kenai on the west side of the Kenai of Anchorage. It was not impressive. Then we decided to go to Steward, even if we had been told that it was just a tourist town. We are so glad that we ended a uneventful day with a fantastic time in Steward. We are here tonight, and after seeing the sea life center tomorrow we will head north to Denali. Steward is a tourist town, but it is also a sea port, and fishing village. Here is the picture from the window while we had dinner. Sorry the picture for the day is not available. The internet connection is too slow. Sorry. To brighten the day early was the cow and calf Moose that crossed the road right in front of us. Then there was the single cow and the big bear that ran across in front of us later.
Now yesterday was the day of adventure. We drove from Glennallen in to Eagle River to the home of Tim Skala. A fabulous home, where we were greeted with a great brunch. Then visited for a while then the adventure began. He took us for a ride. A airplane ride. He has his small plane tied to the dock on the lake at his house (Fire Lake). He took us up canyons, over mountains and then to a glacier. After showing us all of the glacier and surrounding mountains were we saw two mountain goats on his favorite spot to watch the glacier, he landed on the lake so we could go slow and really look at the glacier. It was amazing, then he decided to get some ice for drinks later. So he shut down the planes engine, got the ice and got ready to start up again. But the battery was dead and the plane would not turn over. A few minutes earlier he had told us that if he put us ashore, we could never walk out because of the glacier and river.
So we were on the glacier lake with a dead plane. He had to start the plane by spinning the prop, I ran the switches and throttle. It only took an hour to get it going. But it did work and we did not have to radio for help. Then a aerial tour of the entire city of Eagle River and back to Fire lake. Then the much deserved Marquitas with 10,000 year old ice. They were wonderful. The perfect drink before the dinner of Moose. We will put pictures of the glacier on the blog when we can. but this connection is touchy at best.

Two Different Days
How different two days can be. Yesterday we were in Haines at the Halsingland Hotel on the old Fort Seward. The first picture is of the hotel. Then we drove to Tok, AK. Of course we passed through BC and YT, (British Columbia, and Yukon Terr.) We saw beautiful mountains, boring land across BC and YT, except for the mountain sheep, the Swan (second Picture) and lakes and rivers, but in all not much to see. Then we got into AK and the scenery improved. Thought about camping after a stop at the Million Dollar Falls Camp ground in BC, but when we got near Tok the campground was not nearly as good, and we really weren't ready. So into town and plans to camp Saturday night. Near Valdez, AK. Mary found a great camp in Milepost. Of course the people in the Motel and cafe were real new to their jobs, everything is just opening up after a nice winter.

From Haines
I sit in the hotel and the sun is shinning bright. When I woke at 3:30 am I thought it must be time to get up as it was light, then I looked at the clock and went back to sleep. I don't think it ever got dark last night. Today there is not a cloud in the sky. it could not be more beautiful. The Hotel was built as the Officers Quarters for Ft. Seward in 1904. The other old builds surround the square. It is wonderful.
Yesterday was another fantastic day. After going down town, Mary wanted to see the old Orthodoxy church, and seeing the million tourist from the 5 huge cruise ships in port, we fled the town. Went to see the Mendenhall Glacier in a National Forest. You can drive to it, 4 miles from Juneau. It was really fun and you can see the blue ice of the Glacier so clearly. Then drove around the area and found the greatest campground. But of course we were leaving the area, but next time.
Finally we got on the Ferry for our last leg of the Alaskan Marine Highway. We spent 4 and half hours "driving north" to Haines arriving at 9. The group from New Zealand were on the same Ferry. The trip was the best one yet. Saw whales, seals, dolphins, eagles, glaciers, beautiful mountains, and lighthouses. It was by far the best of the legs on the Ferry.
When we got here to Haines we drove the 5 miles into town and found the Halsingland Hotel here on the old fort. It is truly a lovely place. Went to have a drink in the bar, taught the "bar tender" how to make drinks, (it was his second day ever behind a bar) and visited with a local tour guide and folks from the ferry. In clear day light we gave up and went to bed at 11. Wow we must be getting north. But today we head further north, in 42 miles we will re-enter Canada, and finally get back to Alaska, we hope for the night around Tok. Might camp for the first time, so don't know when we will get to the internet. So bye for the day until we can catch you up again.
The pictures are of the Mendenhall Glacier and the second of the great lighthouses we saw on the way to Haines. Whales are hard to photograph, they just will not pose of you.

Juneau Morning
It is early morning as I sit in the motel room looking out over one of the many harbours of Juneau. We are in a nice room in a run down looking Motel. Booking on the internet is always an adventure. But "The Breakwater Inn" has very nice rooms, even if we would not have stopped here except it was 6:30 pm and we had reservations. And yet one of the nicer rooms. There are mostly commercial fishing boats in this harbour and I do love my fishing boats. Not much activity for 5:30 am.
Yesterday, was another good day, if very different. Up late, well Mary was, then to the Raptor Recovery Center. Great place, they specialize in Bald Eagles, that is what there are the most of in Alaska, but do have a Golden Eagle and several Owls. We spent over an hour there. One of the young people told us about, the "Bear Fortress", a place that is trying to be a recovery center for brown bears. They have two year and half old cubs at about 250 lbs. they are in a large tank that is made to be like the natural habitat. We finally found it and it was okay. the tank is about 400 ft across and high enough to be good safe viewing. The two cubs were orphaned and would not have made it in the wild. So they are saving bears. Brown bears are an Alaskan Bear and only kind around Sitka. Grizzly is type of brown bear. the Sitka bear is unique, in that it has been isolated for so long.
Then it was the chocolate factory. Fun and good. 2 lbs of dark seconds is very good.
then to the Ferry. The "Fairweather" is a high speed passenger and vehicle ferry that makes day runs to places outside of Juneau. It traveled at speeds up to 35 knots. There were 57 passengers on board and everyone stayed to themselves or in their group. No interesting conversations except with Mary. The 4 and half hours were uneventful except for a good light house.
After supper in our room, we went to the famous "Red Dog Saloon" It is in old Juneau and has been there since frontier days. They had a singer, that sang old country songs. He was actually pretty good. It is near the cruise ship docks and was full of cruise folks when we got there. Three large ship in harbour. Boy does that make a down touristy. But it was fun. Then home before dark which arrived at 10:30. Today is a trip to the Mendenhall Glacier, the most photographed glacier in the world, a 10 mile drive, and then on the Ferry for the final leg of our ferry trip. Tonight in Haines.
The pictures are of the light house and the two bears. Very important things to Mary and me.

Sitka is Wonderful
Sitka is delightful. Yesterday, we saw Russian Dances, Native Dances, Totem Pole Park, with a carver, the Bishops House for the Orthodox Church, a eagle eating salmon and chasing off young eagles and Ravens away from it, lots of tourist shops, (there only two cruise ships in town) and had the most fantastic dinner we have ever had. It was in a small (14 seats at tables, reservations only, and 6 at the bar, first come first sitted, we were at the bar) but the best food I have ever and the people were so friendly. One of the things we have noticed about this trip is how friendly people have been. We are having such fun. It is trully wonderful.
Now some pictures. The eagle was the winner, in the fight with two younger eagles and several Ravens. The second picture is Mary with one the totems at the National Park.

Good Morning from Sitka
I am in the lobby of the Super 8 of Sitka. Mary is sleeping. We got here at 2 am. What a wonderful trip on the Ferry. Great time visiting with a couple from England and a group from New Zealand. Just really great folks. Never a cruise ship. The Ferry is so relaxed, so much fun.
Well maybe a cruise in Greece, or someplace but never to Alaska.
Today I was just told about a Native Dances and Russian Dancers. And a raptor center, so there seems to be plenty for us to do until 2 tomorrow. I will have pictures this evening.
On the Ferry
I am sitting in the writing room aboard the Taku somewhere north of Petersburg, AK. I am writing this in a word processor, as the internet does not exist in the middle of the inland passage. We boarded the Taku an hour late last night, but have made up the time. The trip is wonderful. We have seen several whales, the earth is beautiful. At one point the passage is only two hundred yards wide. We have enjoyed visiting with the passengers, especially a couple for England and a group from New Zealand.
Last night we had a cabin. A two berth outside cabin. That means a set of bunk beds, I got the top, a small bath room and a shelf to but things on. Spartan is a good word. But the beds were good, even if small. Mary slept well, I did except for the two hours I was up at Ketchikan. I really wanted to see this village that I have heard about all my life, well since I was seven. Of course it was night and all I saw was the docks and the lights of the city.
Today we gave up our cabin, we will leave the ship at 1 am and show no need for the cabin and there are several people sleeping on the floor, that want a cabin and will be spending the entire night on board. So we gave it up and get a very small refund, but know that someone will get a nights sleep. It is real quiet here right now. The sun is shining through light clouds. Everyone is just reading, writing, sleeping, or looking out the windows. It is cool outside. The ship is moving fast enough to make the wind cold. The scenery is still beautiful, but we have seen it for last 9 hours. Beautiful green mountains on both sides of the boat. We will be stopping in Kake in an hour or so. Then on to Sitka.
So long for now.

Prince Rupert
Tonight we are in the "Inn on the Harbour" in Prince Rupert, (no one sent flowers). We have checked in at the Ferry Terminal, and have tickets, and a broading sticker for the car. Tomorrow we will load at 4:30, go to our cabin and relax.
Today was an easy day, the one thing we decided to do today was closed. So we went to the Museum here in PR. It was wonderful.
We did see another bear today, right along side the road.
Tomorrow we get to relax and look around the town, until 4:30 then we relax on the Ferry. Wow a Sunday to relax.
Hope all of you that read this are haveing a good day.
The Picture is from yesterday. A line of totem in a small village along the river. This are truly the village totems. We saw two village with totems. It was wonderful.

A Totem Day
Today we drove from Prince George to Terrace, BC. An easy drive through a variety of landscapes. From ag area, to rivers, to mountains, to river country. Tonight we are in a little family owned motel on the Copper River. I mean on the river, we ate dinner, picnic style, 6 ft. from the edge of the bank that drops 50 ft into a very high, very fast, very muddy river, where steam paddlewheeler, once traveled.
The high light for the day was a visit to the Native Villiage of Ksan, and surrounding villages to see totems. At Ksan there is a wonderful visitor center and seven long houses and totems. Only a little was open as it is early in the season. This week-end is the May long week-end, equal to our Memorial Day, as the beginning of sumer. Speaking of summer, it was beautiful today, in the high 20's. That is C. of course. Sun shone all day. wonderful. It is now 10:30 and is finally dark. Still day light a 10.
The picture of the day is Mary in front of one of the long houses and totems at Ksan.
One of the things I wanted to see, was an old Hudson Bay Fur Company Fort at Fort St. James. It is said to be very good. It will open tomorrow for the season. So missed it. Darn it. But the Native Village made up for it. Off to Prince Rupert tomorrow. Will stay at the Inn on the Harbour, just in case any one wants to sent flowers.
Love to all of you.
In Prince George
Today the sky is clear and it is beautiful, like it was yesterday. I know we did not enter anything for a couple of days, so lets go back in time.
After Lake Louise we spent a day of water and Sheep. The water came in two forms. First the Glacier. we took a ride out on the glacier, we have walked on a glacier. Wow, lots of ice and snow. Yes, it was cold. Very cold. but had a great time. Saw lots of other glaciers as we drove north on the Icefield Parkway, from Lake Louise to Jasper.
After the glacier it was wonder and amazing waterfalls. We saw two great ones. We also got some walking in to see them. Very different falls, but spectacular.
Then we ended the day at the Miette Hot Springs. Where we stayed at place next to them. They are located East of Jasper and 17 km off the Highway. Remote is a good word. It was wonderful to sit in natural hot water at 40 degrees C. and look at snow covered peaks. Wow.
As for sheep, Mountain Sheep, of course. We had to stop on the Parkway for three rams. Then we had to avoid them in the parking lot of the Hot Springs.
Yesterday we got up and had breakfast back in Jasper. Then headed west where we finally arrived in Prince George. On the way we saw, mountains, waterfalls, and a bear.(no pictures) sleeping along the Highway. It raised its head when we slowed down and looked. More driving than sightseeing.
First picture is Mary on the Glacier. Second picture of Rearguard Falls. The last place the salmon have to climb.

Lake Louise, Alberta
We have spent the night in Lake Louise, AB. This is one of the places that was a must on this trip. Mary's Mother had been here, as well as many of our friends. It is beautiful. There is no lake now, well I did not see a lake, just a large frozen flat spot, but it was beautiful. We then had drinks in the lounge of the Lodge, (where we could have stayed, they had rooms, for only $400 per night.) So $25 worth of drinks, one each, and we went back to our other lodge. Yesterday was spent looking at the beauty of the area. Today will be more of the same as we travel all the way to Jasper, 223 km. It will take about 7 hours, four of which will be spent stopped seeing this beautiful area. Then we will head west toward the Pacific and our date with the Ferry.
Yesterday at the top of the mountain, after the Gondola ride it was 0 degrees, right at freezing. The view was amazing. All of Banff Valley and the entire area around as you get a 360 degree view. Our heavy winter coats paid for their space in our car.
The Picture is of Mary at Lake Louise.

Wedding Pictures
Dear friends, Some of the million pictures that the photographer took at Kathy and Eric's wedding are posted on his blog. The blog site is: http://www.prestonpalmer.net/2008/05/kathy-erics-wedding/ hope you enjoy. I would expect more in the future, but who knows. I am posting this early Tuesday while Mary is still sleeping. she has not seen them yet. So if you look fast you can see them before her.
The mountains are so beautiful, even in the snow. The weather says it may snow. yuck. But Miss Garmin (our GPS) says it is only 67 Km to the Lake Louise Inn, where we stay tonight. Wow what a difference from the 675 miles of yesterday, and the 650 of the day before. But of course Banff lies between here and there so we will find something to do on the way.
Take care all.

The Rockies
Tonight we are in Canmore, AB, CA. Every way you look there are snow covered mountains. Had a wonderful dinner, sat in the outdoor hottub and looked at the mountains. It has been a long two days of driving, was on the road 12 hours both days, but now we are here. From here on it will be a much slower pace. Tomorrow night we will be in Lake Louise, only 60 miles from here. Then the next night in Jasper. It is hard to learn the metric system so quickly. This picture is from the front door of our motel.

Canada
Its Sunday night and we are in Estavan, Canada. Drove 650 miles today, leaving WBL about 7:30am. Landed here at 7:00 or 6:00 mountain time. Saw some interesting scenery but most of North Dakota is much like Neb or So Dak except for the oil wells and coal mining around this area. Had my Mother's Day dinner complete with chocolate Sunday. Off to Banff tomorrow. ( I have a new son-in-law for Mother's Day !!!)
Wedding
The wedding was wonderful. Father Tom, Rev Will and I were part of the service. Kathy and Eric had chosen the vows, exchange of rings etc. very well. Following the service there was a dinner at Tria, where the dinner was great. After that the family gathered at Mike and Mary Lou's and gifts were opened. What a blessed day.

On The Way, Well sort of:
Yesterday, we said goodbye to Wayne and Everyone there for a month or so and drove the two cars, yes, two cars to Lino Lakes, MN. That is near White Bear Lake and is where Eric and Kathy live. (why two cars, One is going to Alaska and is totally full of travel stuff. Camping takes stuff. and there was no room for Chloe and her crate. So the Wedding car, the big one, had to carry her.) Got here ok and had pizza with Eric, Kathy, Mike, Marylou, Jack, Joanna, and Uncle Clark. Clark is Stan's (Mary's Kid's father) brother. It is so good that he can be here for Kathy. She always said that he would be the one to take her father's place at her wedding.
It was fun, but a note of sadness. Maya, the snoodle puppy that Mike and Marylou and the kids got three weeks ago, escaped from Marylou's parent while the family was in California last week-end and has not been found. Lots of time and tears, but no sign of her. Mary and I went with them when the bought her three weeks ago. She was so cute.
Of course no one here is at all nervous, I mean the wedding is not till Saturday. Ha Ha Ha.
Wait a minute that is tomorrow. Wow
Will really start the trip to Alaska on Sunday Morning.

Packing Up
The fun job of packing is well on its way. Of course packing for Alaska is one thing, now add packing for the wedding, ("Sat at 2, Kathy will wed Eric" ) In White Bear Lake, MN. So we have two packing jobs to do. And of course we have to leave the house ready to show. The Realitor claims it should sell while we are gone. So back to work now.

Getting Ready to Go
Hi, this is the first blogging. As we are getting ready to leave for our month long trip to Alaska, I thought it might be fun to do some blogging as we travel to let the world, at least you who are interested know what we were doing. We will not be able to enter stuff all the time, but will try to when we get the chance to go online. So look for us here.
We are starting to pack the car with all the things to camp and travel for a month or so. Yes, it will all go in the Yaris. We will be very close.
We will be at the wedding, Kathy and Eric's, next week, and then leave on the 11th from White Bear Lake. Will be on the ferry the night of the 18th. So it will be a busy exciting times in our lives.
