The Adventure get Adventurous

Today is Monday Memorial Day, 2008, today we had a quiet day as we drove to Kenai on the west side of the Kenai of Anchorage. It was not impressive. Then we decided to go to Steward, even if we had been told that it was just a tourist town. We are so glad that we ended a uneventful day with a fantastic time in Steward. We are here tonight, and after seeing the sea life center tomorrow we will head north to Denali. Steward is a tourist town, but it is also a sea port, and fishing village. Here is the picture from the window while we had dinner. Sorry the picture for the day is not available. The internet connection is too slow. Sorry. To brighten the day early was the cow and calf Moose that crossed the road right in front of us. Then there was the single cow and the big bear that ran across in front of us later.

Now yesterday was the day of adventure. We drove from Glennallen in to Eagle River to the home of Tim Skala. A fabulous home, where we were greeted with a great brunch. Then visited for a while then the adventure began. He took us for a ride. A airplane ride. He has his small plane tied to the dock on the lake at his house (Fire Lake). He took us up canyons, over mountains and then to a glacier. After showing us all of the glacier and surrounding mountains were we saw two mountain goats on his favorite spot to watch the glacier, he landed on the lake so we could go slow and really look at the glacier. It was amazing, then he decided to get some ice for drinks later. So he shut down the planes engine, got the ice and got ready to start up again. But the battery was dead and the plane would not turn over. A few minutes earlier he had told us that if he put us ashore, we could never walk out because of the glacier and river.
So we were on the glacier lake with a dead plane. He had to start the plane by spinning the prop, I ran the switches and throttle. It only took an hour to get it going. But it did work and we did not have to radio for help. Then a aerial tour of the entire city of Eagle River and back to Fire lake. Then the much deserved Marquitas with 10,000 year old ice. They were wonderful. The perfect drink before the dinner of Moose. We will put pictures of the glacier on the blog when we can. but this connection is touchy at best.
